Does Caffeine Increase Energy Expenditure?
Research suggests that it can.
An older controlled trial found that caffeine increased energy expenditure in healthy volunteers in a dose-dependent manner.
Another study found that 100 mg of caffeine temporarily increased resting metabolic rate in both lean and previously obese participants.
However, these findings need context.
A temporary increase in energy expenditure does not necessarily translate into meaningful long-term changes in body weight.
That's because body weight is influenced by energy intake, physical activity, appetite, adaptive responses, sleep, genetics, and many other factors.
A small temporary increase in energy expenditure is not equivalent to a large increase in daily calorie burning.
Does Caffeine Increase Fat Metabolism?

Can Your Body Adapt to Caffeine?
Another reason caffeine shouldn't be viewed as a permanent metabolism accelerator is tolerance.
Regular caffeine consumption can change the body's response to the stimulant.
Some of the effects that feel noticeable when someone isn't accustomed to caffeine may become less pronounced with habitual use.

If you're interested in hunger and weight management, it's more useful to consider the broader factors affecting appetite—including meal composition, protein and fiber intake, sleep, stress, and eating patterns.
Does Caffeine Actually Cause Weight Loss?
This is the question behind most of the interest.
And the answer requires careful wording.
Caffeine can influence processes related to energy expenditure and fat metabolism.
But that doesn't mean caffeine alone produces substantial long-term weight loss.
The research is much stronger for acute physiological effects than for the idea that caffeine independently produces large, sustained changes in body weight.
Think of the distinction this way:

The value of understanding caffeine is knowing what it can realistically do—and where its effects stop.
Where Does This Leave Coffee-Based Metabolism Supplements?
This is also why it's important to distinguish between coffee, caffeine, and a coffee-based supplement.
A supplement that contains caffeine or other compounds may be marketed around the idea of increasing energy expenditure or supporting fat metabolism.
But evidence for caffeine itself does not automatically establish that a particular commercial formula produces the same outcome.
Each finished product needs to be evaluated according to its actual ingredients, doses, formulation, and clinical evidence.
